EVE BUNTING

Dear Reader,

Whenever I speak to groups of children, someone in the audience is sure to ask: "Mrs. Bunting, where do you get your ideas? You write so many books! How do you think of all those things to put in them?"

Ah, well! That is never my problem. My problem is that the world is filled with so many ideas, and here am I, right smack in the middle of it. I couldn't possibly write about all the interesting things I see around me or all the interesting thoughts that pop into my head, there aren't that many hours in a day or that many days in a year!

I'm doing my best. So far I've written about ghosts and giants, and about creatures with scales and fins. I've written of sharks and whales and giant squid. I've written of kings and princes, and of ordinary children growing up, and of young men growing old. I've written of happy families and unhappy families, of living and dying.

What is there left? A million things. A friend once told me that I should slow down and take a rest from writing once in a while. How could I? For me, writing is like breathing. It's just plain necessary.

May you days be filled with joy and wonder and discovery. And may mine, too.

About the author

Eve Bunting was born and educated in Northern Ireland. In 1958 she came to the United States with her husband and three children and settled in California.

Her first book, The Two Giants, was published in 1972. "It was a story about Finn McCool, the Irish giant, and how he outsmarted Culcullan, the terrible Scottish giant," she says. "I thought everybody in the world knew that story, and when I found they didn't - well, I thought they should."

Since that first book, Eve Bunting has gone on to write more than a hundred others, ranging from picture books to novels for young adults. Her honors include the Golden Kite Award from the Society of Children's Book Writers, the Southern California council on Literature for Children and Young People Award, the PEN Los Angeles Center Literary Award for Special Achievement in Children's Literature, the Southern California Council on Literature for Children and Young People Excellence in a Series Award, the Edgar, given by the Mystery Writers of America, and recognition by the Commonwealth of Club of California.

She has taught writing at the University of California, Los Angeles, and is on the board of directors of the Society of Children's Book Writers and The Writer magazine. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Ed, and they have four grandchildren.
